The Boys and Girls Club of Canada held their annual major fundraiser, the Capital One Race for Kids, on May 31st, 2014. The event is based on the reality show The Amazing Race and SECURE entered two teams in the competitive stream of the Wetaskiwin race. Over the past year, SECURE’s facilities in the area have partnered together in donating over $20,000 to help kick start the club’s arrival to Drayton Valley. Local Boys and Girls Club leadership commented that they have had many corporate sponsors over the years, but have never seen a company get as enthusiastically involved as SECURE.
The race began with a shotgun start and participants received clue sheets with riddles, puzzles, and hints to point them to ten challenge stations located somewhere in the 9km course. Upon arrival at each station, racers had to successfully complete the challenge, receive a letter token, and then proceed to the next station. Some of the challenges included wooden horse roping, virtual golf, sign-making, ice cream making, selling $40 worth of foam pucks at Canadian Tire, and an obstacle course with all four team members saran-wrapped together. At the finish line, racers used their tokens to spell out the mystery words before crossing.
SECURE’s ladies team (SECURE Squad) and men’s team (SECURE Waste Watchers) both made it to the finals, with the ladies taking home “best costumes” and the men coming in second place for which they received a $1000 cheque (which was promptly donated back to the club).
Thank you to all of the SECURE folks that helped support our teams with their financial donations. Together we were able to raise over $3000 for the Boys & Girls Club.
